CRF Projects
An Overview of CRF's Project Activities
The CryptoRights Foundation (CRF) researches, integrates, builds and deploys
technology and services designed to protect the lives of humanitarian
and journalism workers. We want to help people who work in dangerous
places to better --and more safely-- collect and process critical
information --witness statements, etc-- by securing and
authenticating and protecting the data they collect, store and transmit.
CRF's two main Groups are:
CRF's Research & Development Group (R&D) conducts ongoing
R&D projects on securing data communications and processing
technologies that are useful to humanitarian workers. Our primary
project is to develop a secure wearable human
rights productivity device for humanitarian fieldworkers. The
R&D Group integrates and extends inexpensive open source software and
hardware. Our goal is to create usable high assurance information
security tools and complete security solutions for HR fieldworkers
that run on our wearable prototype or a wide range of inexpensive
computers. CRF's R&D projects also include short-term integration
efforts and longer term crypto research and security policy projects.

CRF's Client Services Group (CS)
conducts field missions to deliver and deploy these security
technologies, to train humanitarians and journalists in their
proper use and to help them maintain their communications
security infrastructures. We operate in five geographical regions —
North America, Latin America, Europe/Balkans, Asia/Pacific and
Mideast/Africa). Many services
are currently under development or seeking donor funding. For
more information, or to help us develop operational support for
humanitarian groups in any of these regions, please visit the
Client Services home page).
Background: Why Humanitarian Security?
The multitude of serious threats facing human rights workers and
journalists working in the field are a clear and present danger
both to them and to everyone benefitting from their work: and
that means you too. CRF integrates and develops
strong information security solutions for humanitarians with
critical field communications needs while operating in
environments ranging from "moderate risks" to "severe hazards."
CRF's security technology support and training services can
assist non-governmental humanitarian organizations to
successfully deploy these protective technologies out to those
people working for their organizations in the field where
coordination of their activities enhances their ability to
survive their work and to strengthen human rights.
