September 2000 Physical Meeting Announcement

Agenda

This is a low-key, outdoor meeting at the geodesic dome-home of Eric Messick and Hugh Daniel in the Santa Cruz mountains. Carpooling would be an excellent idea, given the limited parking and Hwy 17's reputation for munching speeders.

• 12:00-1:00: Bring/eat your lunch, undo geographical delocalization, admire mountain roads and wildlife.
• 1:00-2:00: Admire the E-Dome, Hugh's Lab and the Copper-Insulated Wall, socialize, discuss where you got singed at Burning Man, help Plan the big RSA party (see below!), etc.
• 2:00-2:30: A Cypherpunk on Ascension Island — Way out in the middle of the ocean, Ascension Island is forbidden turf for mere mortals like us. It's fortified and occupied by the NRO, NSA, and probably several other American spook agencies, and is an alternate landing site for NASA's Space Shuttle, and probably for any Aliens visiting friends in the DoD :-). Our intrepid journalist-cypherpunk Bill Scannell happened by there recently, and since has a Sealand passport, they naturally gave him the full tour.
• 2:30-4:00: Hugh Daniel — Linux FreeS/WAN update and IPsec demo.
• 4:00-5:30: Eric Blossom's Starium bump-on-the-wire Cryptophone demo — They're finally here! 3DES and everything!

As usual, this is an open public meeting on US soil, but please leave the US soil outside :-)

Heads-up: Whit Diffie and Dave Del Torto will speak on Mon 11 Sept at 7:30pm at one of the EFF's "BayFF" meetings. Topics include the RSA patent expiration, human rights and public domain cryptography. Location will be the Hyatt Regency San Francisco Airport in Burlingame. Be there!

NOTE: RSA Data Security has released the RSA algorithm patent to the public domain two weeks early, so bring your code! Also, be advised that the rumors of the patent's demise are greatly exaggerated, so there will definitely still be a BIG party celebrating the patent expiration and it will be a donation-suggested benefit for the non-profit CryptoRights Foundation with big sponsors including Certicom, VA Linux, EFF, PAIP, BPM International, the Shmoo Group, the Secret Order of Former Primes and others TBA. John Gilmore and Cindy Cohn will be master and Mistress of Ceremonies and various crypto luminaries have been invited to speak briefly. The date (which will be finalized super-soon so keep yer panties on!) will be somewhere between 9/20 and 9/22. You do NOT want to miss this one, people!

Location

Most of the online maps provide highly unreliable directions to the E-Dome, so we strongly advise you to use the directions supplied below, or to print out the PostScript version we've put here. The drive takes about 30 minutes from Mountain View or 15-20 from the 280/17 intersection, except during heavy traffic. Parking is on the country road or dirt driveway near the house.

From San Jose, take Highway 17 south from Interstate 280 or Highway 85.

From Santa Cruz, take Highway 17 North from Highway 1.

Exit Highway 17 at Summit Road and head west, in both directions that's a
	right off the highway and left onto Summit Road.

Follow Summit Road past two streets on the left until Summit makes a hard
	right turn at the third street, you want to turn left from Summit Road
	onto Hutchinson Road which is more like going straight (in the day time
	be VERY carful making this 'blind to oncoming traffic' turn!).

Follow Hutchinson until just after Riva Ridge Road veers up on the left and
	you see a long group of black mailboxes on the right, make an acute
	(sharp) right turn here from Hutchinson Road onto Old Ranch Road.

At the first curve/split of Old Ranch road you want to stay right when the
	road splits, (there is a "SLOW 10 SPEED LIMIT" sign at the fork; keep to
	the right of this sign).

Follow the drive down the hill until it flattens out and the trees thin out
	above you, you should see the top of the E-Dome on your left, our
	driveway is the next left.
