CRF Privacy Policy
[DRAFT]
The CryptoRights Foundation (CRF) is committed to protecting the
privacy of visitors to our Web site, as well as that of our members
activists and clients.
In this policy "CRF" refers to CRF staff, board members,
cooperating attorneys, interns, volunteers and consultants, all of whom
are bound by law or contract to keep information they receive as part of
their assistance to CRF confidential.
As to all of the information described below, CRF will not give, sell,
rent or exchange the information with anyone else without your prior
consent except as compelled by law (see the final section).
Web site Privacy Policy
CRF servers may record the numerical Internet protocol (IP) address of
the computer you are using; the browser software you use and your
operating system; the date and time you access our site; and the Internet
address of the Web site from which you linked directly to our site.
We use this information to measure the number of visitors to different
sections of the site, to diagnose and correct system errors, and to
improve the site. We delete this information after one month.
We may also use such information for security purposes
in the event of system cracking attempts, denial-of-service attacks and
the like. We do not connect this information to your name or identity,
such as tracking which clients visit our site when, whether any
given member visits certain pages, etc.
We do not use "cookies" on this site for any purposes other
than enhancing the user experience (e.g. making it easier to fill in
forms by "remembering" previously-entered information, or preserving
your preferences with regard to features of the site between multiple
sessions.) Cookies are never used by us for user tracking, and
no features of the site are dependent upon cookies (or javascript or
anything other than basic Web-browsing capabilities).
Membership Privacy Policy
When you join CRF, we collect your name, postal address, e-mail address
and other contact information, whatever other data you decide to provide
to us (e.g. comments you elect to fill in, preferences you select, etc.),
and record the date that you joined. The amount and date of donation for your
initial membership donation, and any subsequent donation, is recorded for
our records. We respect anonymous donations. You may submit voluntarily
any other personal information we request, including phone numbers, fax
numbers and the like, which we store with your membership records.
We do not retain credit card information but only use it to process your
present donation and the discard it. Credit card numbers for monthly donors
are kept in a secure location and processed in a secure online batch once per
month or sooner. Your credit card information is never stored insecurely
on our server, and our server will not permit you to submit it insecurely,
for your protection.
List and Forum Privacy Policy
There are a number of ways to subscribe to CRF mailing lists, and
to participate in CRF activities online, including submitting a form at
our Web site, opting in when you join CRF, requesting via e-mail to be
subscribed, or mailing a sign-up form from a brochure or flier. When you
subscribe, you will receive a confirmation message welcoming you to the
CRF list, forum or activity group(s) you have chosen. You may unsubscribe
from any such resource at any time. You will never
be subscribed to any CRF mailing lists or forums without your permission, though
it is conceivable that CRF will very infrequently mail all of its members,
clients, and/or subscribers with important notices or information. Additionally,
our system may send subscribers automatic subscription reminders or other
admistrative messages periodically (and we do not presently have any means
of turning this feature on or off on a per-user basis in most cases.)
When you subscribe to CRF's lists, forums or workgroups, we may collect your
name, e-mail address, city, state, postal code, and country of residence, as well
as other information you choose to provide. If you opt
in, we may use your e-mail address to send you updates and alerts on
protecting human rights in the digital world, so you may take action, such
as contacting your government representatives or attending an
event. You will not receive such messages unless you a) ask for them, or
b) have subscribed to a list the (whole or partial) purpose of which is to
distribute such materials.
You may remove your name from any CRF mailing list or other CRF forum at any time
by following the unsubscribe instructions provided to you upon your initial
participation (this method will generally be automated and immediate). You may
also send a manual "unsubscribe" request to our Listmaster using the Feedback form and your request will be processed as soon as possible.
Compelled Disclosure
If we are required by law or a court of competent jurisdiction to
disclose the information that you have submitted, we will attempt to
provide you with notice (unless we are legally prohibited from doing so) that a
request for your information has been made in order to give you an
opportunity to object to the disclosure. We will attempt to provide this
notice by e-mail, if you have given us an e-mail address, or by postal
mail if you have entered a postal address. We will independently object
to overly broad requests for access to information about users of our
site. If you do not challenge the disclosure request, we may be legally
required to turn over your information. To the extent we may legally
do so, we will resist any governmental or corporate attempt to attain
private information regarding our users, be they clients, paying members,
or simply site visitors.
CRF welcomes constructive feedback about its policies.
